Students from all over Vancouver Public Schools recently competed in fall sports state competitions. Congratulations to the following state champions and athletes who placed in the top 10!

Volleyball
Columbia River High School claimed its first volleyball state championship in more than 20 years at the 2A tournament on Nov. 20. The varsity team included Tatum McDowell, Sasha Pelkey, Rylie Reeves, Caroline Hansen, Lauren Dreves, Cora Jean Harding, Aaliyah Turner, Taegen Benke, Sophie Worden, Eveyln Wenger, Logan DeJong and Sydney Dreves. Breanne Smedley is the head coach.

Cross-country
After winning the first cross-country district title in the school’s history, Fort Vancouver High School’s girls’ cross-country team cruised to fourth place at the 2A championship on Nov. 6. Scoring team members included Dani Buttrell, Sarah Gardner, Molly Malone, Shelby Willett, Athiena Ghormley, Emma Cortez and Pamela Melchor Burgos. Owen Frasier is the head coach.

Daniel Barna, Columbia River High School, came in second at the 2A boys’ cross-country championships. Barna also won the district race. Scott Jones is the Columbia River boys’ cross-country head coach.

Soccer
Columbia River High School’s girls’ soccer team clinched third place at the 2A state tournament on Nov. 20 in a game against Ridgefield. Filly Afenegus is the head coach. The varsity team included Alia Rust, Sydney Stimmel, Nicolette Seibel, Ivy Henderson, Amelie Miller, Maree Seibel, Avah Eslinger, Andie Buckley, Peyton Dukes, Anna Iniguez, Avery Siegel, Elise Maffeo, Logann Dukes, Kinzi Drake, Madeline Ayers, Ava Lapinskas, Hannah Ziebell, Gracia Larson, Sydney Johnson, Lauren Gunderson, Lillian Mickel and Raya Janson.

Swimming
Two VPS swimmers placed in the top 10 at the 2A girls’ state swim and dive championships Nov. 12-13. Jane Tewinkel, competing for Columbia River High School, finished sixth in the 100-yard backstroke and seventh in the 100-yard butterfly. Alyssa Bissell is the Columbia River girls’ swimming head coach.

Hudson’s Bay High School swimmer McKelvey Brewer placed ninth in the 100-yard butterfly. Sarah Dunn is the Hudson’s Bay girls’ swimming head coach.
