Attend school daily

  • Establish “lights out” routine and remove electronics.
  • Make sure they are eating breakfast.
  • Accept no excuses for not attending school unless seriously ill. Learn the school policy for excusing absences.

Organization/lessons

  • Provide student with basic calendar/planner.
  • Make sure student has a place to save assignments at home.
  • Do backpack checks to make sure student is staying organized.
  • Discuss projects and lessons.

Homework completion

  • Establish a time and place for student to study at least 45 minutes.
  • Review student’s planner to see what work they should be doing.
  • If there is no actual assignment, the student should reread and/or rewrite notes or have a book to read.

Gets along well with others

  • Be aware of who your students associate with.
  • Be aware of how your student reacts in conflict situations.
  • Friendships from elementary and middle school change.
  • Encourage involvement in activities.

Seeks help when needed

  • Encourage student to communicate with school staff when having difficulty.
  • Help student figure out transportation to and from school if they need to stay after.
  • Schools have resources and support.

Stay informed

  • Family Access: View attendance, grades and assignments
  • Email/call teachers or counselor if there is a concern
  • Attend parent conferences in the fall and student-led conferences in the spring
  • Check school websites for latest information
