ntegrated algebra                  Ms. Pollastro, Mr. Shields

Welcome to the first semester of Integrated Algebra!  We look forward to spending the beginning of the year with you, and want to help you be successful.  This sheet outlines class procedures and expectations.

Materials

Required  You must have pencil (with eraser), every class period.  We expect you to maintain two (2) one-subject notebooks for notes and homework, and it will be important to keep these separate. We will be working out of the SIMMS Integrated Mathematics 1 textbook, which you should bring to class everyday.

Recommended  We recommend a small pencil sharpener, scientific calculator, graph paper, protractor, and a ruler, but these will be provided if you do not have them.  These items are also available for purchase.

Stamp Sheets

Homework will be checked daily for completion, and recorded on your Stamp Sheet, which should be filled out in ink.  Each stamp sheet represents two weeks of work, so it is very important not to lose one.  In the event that one is lost, you will have to fill out another stamp sheet and get it stamped off (this is one reason to keep your old homework).  You should glue, staple, or paperclip all stamp sheets to the inside back cover of your homework notebook.

Late work will be accepted (for partial credit) no more than two weeks past its due date. You are responsible for making up all work missed during absence as soon as possible.  Daily assignments, homework, and notes can be found on the wall in the classroom, and on the class web site (see below).  Check here, or with a friend, before asking a teacher.

Notes will also be checked daily and stamped on the stamp sheet.  You are expected to keep your notes organized in a separate notebook than your homework.  We will collect stamp sheets every other Monday, and they must be filled out completely (with dates and assignments).

Stamp sheets will be ordered according to the Greek alphabet this semester.

Grading

You will be graded on in–class activities, homework, notes, and exams. Along with these grades, you will receive a grade on attendance throughout the semester and classroom participation. Grades are calculated by total points, and you will receive progress reports throughout the semester, showing exactly how your grade is calculated.

Class Expectations

NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO INTERFERE WITH THE LEARNING OF OTHERS.

  1. EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHT TO BE RESPECTED.
    1. Use appropriate language (no profanity or offensive terms), and avoid disrespectful comments.  In particular, derogatory use of the words "gay" and "retarded" is unacceptable.
    2. Wear appropriate attire (teachers have the right to see students' eyes: no hoods, and follow dress code regulations).
    3. No feet on desks.
  2. EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHT TO A LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FREE FROM DISRUPTIONS.
    1. Food and drink are distracting and messy.  They will be confiscated and thrown away.  The only acceptable drink is water.
    2. Electronic devices are distracting and are not permitted.  This means no cell phones, CD-players, iPods, portable game devices, etc. They will be taken and given to the business office in accordance with the handbook.
    3. Students arriving late to class disrupt the learning environment; you are expected to be in your seat before the bell rings.  Tasks such as pencil sharpening should occur before the bell rings.  You are allowed 3 tardies before disciplinary action occurs.
    4. You have the right to a peaceful learning environment, and are expected to monitor your own behavior with this in mind.  A few unacceptable behaviors include:

                                                              i.      Throwing objects (even into the trash).

ii.      Packing up early; wait to be excused.

iii.      Yelling responses; raise your hand to be called on.

                                                          iv.      Coming to class unprepared

                                                            v.      Crumpling paper (it is noisy and fills the recycle bin too quickly).

Detentions will be assigned for violations of these expectations.  Detentions must be served in the security office on the date assigned. Failure to serve a detention will result in a longer detention or referral to an administrator.
